Saltwater Fish Aquariums

When planning to set up a Saltwater Fish Aquarium it is wise to do as much research as possible. Go to your local aquarium or pet shop that has quality aquarium supplies and ask for a book on the topic.

After reading, start to do some research by speaking to staff at these outlets and anyone else you know who has saltwater fish.

For the beginner, you can start small and purchase tanks; anything from 1 – 50 gallons or you may want to go with the larger options straight way. In addition to your tank, you will need pumps, filters, lights, and heaters. The size of these will depend on the size of your tank. Again, ask an expert to guide you here. You will also need gravel, rocks, coral and other optional and decorative equipment.

Naturally, a test kit for your water is vital. You will need a stand capable of holding a tank full of water and you must choose the position of it carefully as moving it after you fill it with water will be very difficult. Be sure you are near a power outlet to plug in your electrical equipment.

Now for the big test, fill your tank with your prepared saltwater or add mix once your tank is full. It is now time to turn on all your equipment and make sure it is all working properly. Leave everything running for 24 hours during which time you can check the salinity of the water, make sure the heater is set properly and keeping the water at the correct temperature and importantly, check for leaks. At this stage, you can decorate or “aquascape” your tank. Add gravel, coral, background etc.

Once you are sure everything is working properly, it is time to add your fish. At this stage, it is important to take it slowly and have patience. Only add 1 or 2 different species at any one time and it is wise to keep them in a holding take until they adjust to the new tank, probably for an hour or so depending on the species. It is wise to check with your supplier on this.

Now you can sit back and enjoy your tank but remember that constant maintenance will ensure the survival of your fish. Saltwater tanks do require maintenance. Each day, check temperature and do a water test using your kit and of course, feed your fish.  Weekly, you will need to check salinity, PH levels etc again using your test kit. Over time you will learn to observe changes in the water, is it cloudy?  Your fish, are they active, bright eyes etc.

Owning Saltwater Fish Aquariums may seem like a bit of work for much pleasure can be gained by watching these beautiful creatures in the comfort of your own home or office.
